My best friend lived on a farm and they were tearing down a shed with a bunch of baby raccoons in the loft. Instead of killing them they took them in, kept 1, and gave the rest away. They bottle fed him and raised him until he was about 6 months old, and boy was he mean! That little bugger would bite anyone he didn't know and he finally disappeared one day. They think he climbed up under a car and escaped. I would recommend a dog or cat over a raccoon, they don't make good pets. They are cute though!!
Raccons are very playful and you can potty train them.
My aunt raised orphaned racoons and they can get very dangerous as they get older. They can be very friendly if tame but they will try to climb you like a tree if they are scared. She had them house trained too. They played with their dogs, i think they thought they were dogs too.
I don't own a raccoon or know anyone who has, but I recommend the book "Rascal" by Sterling North (see http://www.amazon.com/rascal-sterling-no. for info) - it's a true story a guy wrote about incidents with his pet raccoon when he was a boy. It taught me a lot of things about raccoons I didn't know before, and it might have some useful information for you.
Ok, me and my bf raised 2 ratcoons that were really really young because their mother got hit by a car and it was so sad. They are reallllyyy mean at first and you just keep them in a cage and bottle feed them puppy formula. Make sure to keep them warm. They also make this really funny noise, like a purring but a lot louder. It is soo cute. But you always have to wear gloves because you never know with ratcoons, if they have any diseases. Occasionally ratcoons will carry a really dangerous disease that can kill you if they bite you!!You will have to look it up Im not sure what its called. After they get off the bottle you just feed them smashed up bananas and fruit. They also love bread and make sure to always keep fresh water nearby. After they get old enough you just let them go in the wild. If not they just hang around up in trees and you can still feed them if you want just leave food by the tree! Hope this helps!
As they get older they will get wild and could attack you and severly hurt or kill you
my little cousin did have one, but it ran away. he had it for about 4 months i think
Bad Idea. Raccoon saliva can cause polyradiculoneuritis. They carry giardia. IT's technically illegal unless you have a wildlife rehab permit.
The racoon could make you sick and if it ever bit anyone who complained, then by law it would be euthanized, it's head cut off and submitted for rabies testing. This is something you should consider before getting one.
I've raised HUNDREDS of baby raccoons. Why don't you volunteer with wildlife rescue and then you too could have hundreds of raccoon babies! It actually feels good to let them grow up, then leave the nest to cause mischief.
Save wildlife! Don't contribute to it's extinction by taking more animals out of the Wild. If you really love raccoons, you wouldn't own one. Unlike Dogs and cats, they need to be free. You'll see that in time.
I agree with Rabid. They can also carry roundworm that can kill people. There are plenty of animals out there that make excellant pets, raccoons are not one of them!
Yeah, read up on raccoon roundworm. It's a potentially deadly parasite that they shed in their poop. Plus they can be really vicious. I've spent alot of time chasing them off my deck and out of my yard.
