Can you own a wolf as a pet?

depends where you live -,mostly no -mostly half wolf is ok-my brother got one
the problem is wild animals raccoons and others too have a wild instinct and when it is triggered they will attack-its not absolute but it does happen often in full blood wild-the half wolves seem to be good

Depends on the laws where you live. Many places that allow them require you to carry insurance on them and have special fences and leashes. Wild animals are not meant to be pets it is mean to keep them confined so you can tell everyone you have a wolf. Get a husky.
No a wolf is a wild animal and only belongs in the wild. If you want a wolf like dog get a huskey or akita!

Check online at your state's wildlife web site. Honestly, even the 1/2 breeds aren't that great of pets. My neighbor has one, she stays chained up outside and is mean to everyone. To me wouldn't be worth the liability-especially if it got loose.
only if you plan to never leave it alone.ever. No dinner dates, no job, no life..no kids! Special licensing is required. I know a guy who owns a half/dog/wolf and he has no outside life. He is always with his 'best friend' and can never leave him alone.

In Canada they need to be mixed 75% or less wolf. My friend has an Arctic Timber Wolf X malamute very nice looking. Cant be trusted with other female dogs she will kill them for real. Very strong hard to controll, never can have them off leash. I have a border collie and i would never go for a wolf.
Yes, but I think it depends on the species. I knew a guy who had several animals and a wolf was one of them. It was pretty friendly with people, but it would rip apart other animals if it saw them. For that reason he kept the wolf downstairs and most/all the other animals upstairs. It might not be a bad idea to check local laws, but I don't see how it would be any different from owning a dog, given the species of wolf of course.

There are dogs bred with wolves originally and now called Hybrids that are legal but even for those must get permission after it caan be shown that adequate enclosure so cannot roam the neighborhood--the wolf part in these Hybrids remains always wild and many cases of these hybrids attacking small children(size of prey) and esp killing domestic animals-not considered safe as pets. A wolf was made by God to be wild and free and were one caught it would not survive in captivity for would always yearn to be free. Dogs are domesticated and meant to be a companion to man-with so many needing a good and caring home why even think of having a animal that one should not have
I know a guy who has 2, got them in Alaska as pups. They were found when there mother was killed. He just moved to PA, and lives in the city with them. He has a special permit from the city to have them. there is alot of paper work involved and alot of insurance. The only time the neighbors complain is when he gets a deer for them to eat.He says the howl when they get a deer. Call of the wild I guess. There not like dogs, you cant take them out on a leash and they only leave the yard to go to a vet visit. And has to puyt them in his fenced in yard when friends visit. they dont make very good pets
a wolf is a wild animal that needs his space ,you can put one in a cadge ,but you can put anything in a cadge .
whatever dog species a wolf breeds with make very good pets or working dogs.

their normal diet is rats and mice,in the winter they may get together and chase a deer of a cliff ,they marry for life,make very good parents,and if one of the parents dies ,a brother or sister will replace them ,to take over caring for the cubs.
i once was followed by a wolf for 3 days ,he came closer all the time ,on the 3rd day he sat in front of me ,and we comunicated i guess,

I used to own a Wolf. We got him from a person that breeds them. They get really big, and need lots of room to run, and can be aggressive. I ended up giving mine away.
first of all i would like to say i just love some of the other answers on here..anyway it all depends on the laws in your area, also you do need special permits and there are strict rules you have to follow. if you add all that to the special licensing, the neighbors concerns that you are bound to get, and finding a good vet that will treat it you're looking at a pretty rough time. but in the long run it is possible to have one.
they are wild creatures and should be left as such, they can be unpredictable. it is illigel in most places to own a wolf,
where i live in NH most of us that DON'T have small children have hybrids. they are illegal in maine and mass. i don't know about your states restrictions. there are towns in NH that allow only particular degrees of hybrids. where i grew up, they can't be more than 1/2. i have a malamute mix, but i don't know his percentage. he looks more wolf (except for his color), so i'd bet he's more than 1/2. his eyes, tail, body structure and demeanor are all wolf. because we have 2 cats he has to be carefully supervised. and not being aware of the timing, i took him out for a walk and he attacked my neighbors little dog on their way back.
i was able to stop him before he did any damage THANK GOD, but now i check my neighborhood before i bring him out. i'll be so happy when the sale of our house is completed and he can have his own 3 acres that he needs to run in. completely fenced of course. if your thinking of getting one, please do lots of research first. most people make the mistake of thinking they're dogs and they're NOT. look up LOKI CLAN on the internet. this is a web site for a refuge. most of these animals came from people that realized they were not dealing with dogs and someone got hurt.

You've had lots of good answers and I have one more pretty major thing to add. Wolves and Wolf hybrids can not be vaccinated against rabies. If they bite someone then they have to be quarantined or killed depending on your locality. This is enough of a deterrent for me.
i know that you can and i don't see why most others dont like wolves. as long as you have the space and you can control it i support people who have them
