can you have a raccoon as a pet?

Is there any laws against it? and do they make okay pets.. i'm sure they're probably a lot like ferrets. obviously after rabies and distempter shots.
does anyone have any experience with keeping a raccoon as a pet?
Answers:
If you want rabies, no problem.

Actually there are laws against it. Unless you keep is uber quiet and don't show it off.
No
Dont do that! These animals are wild, and you know how insane wild animals are..
NO. DON'T DO IT. When I was in Grade School, 60 years ago, I can still remember a friend of mine who had a pet coon.. Those things have extremely sharp and long claws and his pet coon sliced him hand, wrist and arm like like it was cut with a scaple. give Coons a VERY wide berth and leave them alone.
there are laws against it
you cant sorry
dont keep it
Yes, just get a rabies shot and wear plenty of protective eyeware. Good luck!
make sure you talk to the local wildlife rangers and such i believe you have to have a permit to keep them
The only way is to get a baby before it opens its eyes.Otherwise forget it. My girlfriend has had racoons as pets before and she says they're fun.
sure!

you like rabies and lice?

good luck, ma'am!
laws: yes.
good idea: of course not
cute idea: maybe
my friend took care of one as a baby and it stayed in a cage but it still ended up biting him and they had to get rid of them. They are to wild to be confined indoors or in a cage outside.
they raid your frig, open taps and leave the water run, tear holes in screens, are not potty trained, rip stuff up!! get a dog!
I think it's against the law. check your local laws.
They are considered vermin! Rabies shots will not help. Get a dog!
awww. i can understand why you'd want one. they're so adorable!
i wish i could have one too! %26 a squirrel! they're cute!
yes u can..u just hav to buy it from a store =) (good luck finding one) or ask ur city if u can.

i've seen on t.v. sumone selling baby lions.(this is on the news and it gave the phone number) u prob. need a licience though

i also seen ppl own skunks..(the news team did a report on this lady..)
They always stay a bit wild.
Laws probably vary by state. I'm sure they would make a good pet if you got one as a baby. If there are no shots for them it may be illegal to sell them.
There are no shots for ferrets which is why it's illegal to sell them. That's why you have to buy a cage %26 get the ferret for free.
yes, they are still animals right?
Many people may not think of raccoons as pets. Those who so live with them find they make fascinating and funny companions, although prone to a little, or maybe lots, of mischief.
Before even considering a raccoon though, be aware that they are illegal in many areas. Check with local and state/provincial regulatory bodies before pursuing the idea of having a raccoon as a pet. If raccoons are legal where you are, then the search is on. It is best to obtain them from a breeder, although one may be difficult to find. Some have raised orphan raccoons as pets. In any case, it is best if the raccoons are very used to being handled, a lot and from an early age. This will help make them more sociable and less prone to bite. Raccoons are prone to biting, especially if they feel threatened, so be prepared that this may happen.
They are tempting b/c they are so darn cute..but ewwwww they carry way too many disease and germs and are cruel to other animals. You can't tame a racoon.it's their nature to be in the wilderness. Don't take them out of their natural environment..it's not natural. I hear they will drown dogs in pools of water if they are hungry enough.. adopt a dog or cat.there are too many out there that need loving homes..
I know they are legal to have as a pet in Utah, I knew someone that had one. She also got scratched and got very ill from blood poisoning, even after the animal had all of its shots.
My dad had a racoon as a pet and it was very protective of the family and actually attacked damn near everyone else. It bit one of his friends finger off. They are mean and very mischevious. It is not illegal unless you live in the city. YOu shouldn't leave out of a cage in your home when you are not there it will shred damn near anything it can get hold of. They take a lot of care and clean up and i don't believe it is worth it to have one as a pet.
No they are dangerous animals and can not reliably be tamed.
It would be cruel to the raccoon. I knew some people who had one that they found after cutting down a tree. IT was VERY young when they adopted it. Within a year it was so big and wild that they had to get rid of it, but it had no idea how to fend for itself. They ended up having to put it down.
Save yourself the hassle.
I used to have raccoons for pets, yes they are cute for a while but when they get older they get mean.I have also raised some deer, squirrels, otters, wild rabbits, hawks, opossum and skunks. If you get a permit to own a wild animal its ok, but it also depends on what state you live. Wild animals do not make good pets, because they will always be wild. Get a ferret instead their fun
Check your local animal control laws, then the state for any restrictions on having wildlife as a pet. Because that's what they are, wildlife. Raccoons, on rare occasions can be kept as pets. They are very inquisitive creatures, nocturnal and can be destructive at times.
My suggestion if you want a raccoon for a pet is only have it while it is a baby---My childhood neighbor had one and after it got a little bit older it got very destructive, to the point where it destroyed furniture and walls and carpet. They came home to their house just trashed. I saw with my own eyes what they do. And also know that they carry some pretty serious bacterias in their fecal matter. It is rather dangerous.
