cattlemen/women: will an electic fence hold in three Jersey steers?

we have and a jersey last year and really loved the meat- the only problem is that we did not know we were doing it again so we took down the fences and recycled them. will a thick electric fence hold them in? or do i need to have a regular fence with barbed wire?
electric fence like the horse ones, not the thin little wire ones
Answers:
yes it will work for them, we have 1 bull pen that has electric wire and it works fine, the first time the bulls got zapped, that was all it took and they never, i mean never go near it and they cried like big babies when they got it the first time.
Yes an electric fence should hold the steers. If they get a good jolt in the beginning, its likely that they will not get close to the fence a second time.
if you run two strands it should work fine
it is not the wire that you use it is the fence charger that you get look at a low impedance fencer and the higher the Joule rating the harder the shock will be and make shear that you have got a good ground to make every thing work right.
If they have never been fenced in with "Electric" before it can be tricky. If at all possible introduce them to area one at a time / one after an other. I would mark wires with strips of cloth or ribbon tied at a patterned interval. Make sure to add extra grounds if circumcise of penned area is extra large to insure proper "SHOCK" . After two to three weeks you can almost turn system off and will find it hard to herd them across existing fence line.
