Do rabbits get very emtionally attached to their owners after 6 months from being bought from a pet store?

I got my son a dutch cross bunny for his 11 birthday because that is what he asked for, he went to the pet store and picked it out. Now we have had the bunny 6 months and he doesn`t want to keep it anymore. I feel bad for the bunny. Does it hurt them to be moved and change owners? It is a male and we have not had it fixed. He spends some time each day out of his cage and he is messy. He is not very affectionate, he humps the male cat alot and he comes when the cat meows as if in distress, a nice point. He is smart and lively but shy and doesn`t stay out if many people are around.

Oh please don't get rid our that bunny! Ours are very affectionate and definitely know us. Our baby boy was bought at a pet shop in March '05 and he definitely bonded with us. We got him neutered in November and he is terrific and since being neutered doesn't hump anything or spray. He is great with his litterbox and loves to be petted.
These are wonderful pets and if he ends up in a shelter there is a good chance he will be put to sleep.
Here are some sites where you can learn more about bunnies and I hope, hope, hope you decide to keep him after getting him neutered.

YES THEY CAN PUT U HAV TO HANDLE THEM>>FERRETS DOES THIS BUT THATS WHY U CANT EVER GIVE THEM AWAY BECUZ THEY GET STRESSED AND LONELY!
get red of it rabits are not close to there owners
yes they get attached to their owners. but 6 month old male bunnies will hump a lot and not be affectionate unless they are fixed, so if you want him to be happier %26 affectionate get him fixed. The only thing you can do about your son is to tell him the bunny is his responsibility because he asked for it.
You should have thought about a pet before just getting what your kid wanted. Now you have perpetuated the cycle of unwanted rabbits. I see you didn't do any research or else you would know that kids and buns don't mix and that your rabbit would be much happier if it were fixed. How much time have you actually spent getting to know your rabbit? They aren't affectionate like dogs or cats they have their own ways.
this is why you should not buy a rabbit for your child for any occasion not even easter if i were you i would tell him you wanted this bunny an your going to keep him an take care of him make him learn responsibility i dont know if they emotionally get attached but i do strongley believe they remember their owners mine hop to the cage door when they see me coming to get out an loved on he may be depressed awhile if you got rid of him but i wouldnt your only telling your son its ok if you do he will want something else an he will out grow his want for it as well an it will be kicked out too it will be a pattern DONT DO IT make him tale care of his bunny wether he wants to or not he has to learn you could always tell him when i had you did i get rid of you because you cried or because you were messy pets are just like kids an you cant just get them an decide you dont like them an just dump them off good luck hope i helped dont take him to a shelter they will end up putin him to sleep.. where do you live
